Pâques 2013: des hommes et des dieux

Each Easter makes me think of 2 events : the resurrection of Jesus and my first date with JM 6 Easters ago.

However, today I'd like to talk about the film Des hommes et des dieux (Xavier Beauvois, 2010) I've seen this week. As I am not good at writing critical movie reviews, I found a decent one at IMDb and I'll share the critic's thoughts that I agree with.

"The film is slow in parts. Sometimes it's needed to establish the rhythm of the monks' lives, but other times getting repetitive with no seeming advantage...

Besides the two main characters, the other monks are largely one-note sketches, and the sudden turn around of those who wanted to leave – maybe the most fascinating action in the film - is largely under explored...

But my biggest problem is that the film's style, while inviting thought, is somewhat emotionally distancing, so while my brain was deeply engaged, my heart was less than I wish it was...

Now, all that said, I still think that this is a very, very good film, made with intelligence and passion. It is visually simple but stunning to look at. Its slow pace adds to the meditative, un-Hollywood feel and allows us a taste of the peace these men experience by living in their simple, giving way, even in the midst of war...

Ultimately, this is a film that deserves and needs to be seen."

Ma première vente !

Communication is indispensable in commerce. I heard about it but came to realise it this past Wednesday (March 27) when I sold my first pouch! It wasn't people's favourite but things don't always go the way we expect them to..

The biggest headache came when I started wrapping up my object. I wanted it to be original but I either didn't have the right thing or it just didn't look right. Finally I put my pouch into a zip lock bag and posted it. The customer received it 2 days later and closed the deal with a positive evaluation.

No need to say how excited I was and still am. I should find a better wrapping solution though and be ready for my next sales.

Costança Cabral has a great post on wrapping gifts in old maps that she finds in charity shops. I love this idea!

Macaron trop bon !

Hey, are you going to be in Moscow at the end of June, by any chance? I wish I would!

JM's cousin, Aurore and Paradis de Saveurs are organizing a 3 day master-class with a renowned French pâtissier and chocolate maker, Emmanuel Hamon. His website is gorgeous and good taste is evident before you even get inside.

The venues they've chosen are first-class: P.RO.Stranstvo studio, Hugo Restaurant and Michel Cafe.

March, 1-3 Mr. Hamon gave a master-class in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev and the reviews I've read at Kiev best cake, Igra so vkusom and Nina Niksya are most admirable.

Navy blue polka dot

About a month ago I was at Toto where I bought 3 meters of cute navy blue polka dot cotton. I quickly came up with an idea of a dress but the fabric was too thin for it. Then I hesitated between a layered skirt and a shirt. Finally, I decided it would be a shirt.

I've never tried this pattern (Burda 3/2010) before. It looks all right, I just worry a bit about the sleeves (they might make my shoulders look too big).

Irish shamrock nightgown

My nightgown was just a couple days late for St. Patrick's Day :-) The sale price of the fabric at Toto was 1 euro per meter and I used 1.5 meters for my nightwear.

I've already used the same Burda pattern for a top and another nightgown and I don't think I'm done with it. I love its loose сut and feminine look. It's also very easy to make.

Here's what the original version from 2011 magazine looked like.

Why did you start a blog?

I'm just wondering why people start blogging. I know it's quickly becoming a habit, a lifestyle, even a passion, probably. But in the very beginning, what was your motivation, your reason?

I'll tell you what drove me. I've always loved sewing and in December 2012 I decided to try selling my crafts. There are two most common ways to let people know about you: Facebook or your own website/blog. As I'm opposed to Facebook policy, its communication style, values, methods and I got rid of my account there quite a while ago, the only option left was creating a blog.

I'd be thankful if you told me about your incentives.

Compliance (2012)

Zelig (1983)
Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Small Time Crooks (2000)
Midnight in Paris (2011)
